I'm a student of the game - always working to increase my lacrosse IQ, breaking down plays to understand what everyone is trying to do, and how to stop their efforts.

I consider myself a "role player"  -  I can be the tip of the spear leading the squad from the front, or I can be the coach-on-the-field directing others to work together.  I'm always looking to make sure we win as a unit and doing whatever the TEAM needs me to do at that moment so we succeed.  #WeNotMe

I have a naturally calm demeanor  - I don't get too high, or too low - but I'm highly competitive. I never cut corners and always push myself because I've learned my mind will quite before my body.

YEAR 3 AT CULVER

Year 3 at Culver was a staple experience. Playing at Culver is a privilege but the benefit of time provides perspective on lacrosse and life in general.

I had an amazing year playing top level lacrosse with "Da Boyz".  In the end, we fell short of our goal to repeat as MSLA and Prep Lacrosse National champions (we  only won the MSLA championship; came in 2nd at Prep Lacrosse Nationals).

I will forever be grateful to my teammates and coaches (Coach Horsch especially) for such a memorable year.

On to my senior year and my last hurrah at CMA!

"THERE IS NO BACKUP PLAN"

Funny story.......when I was 6 years old I announced to my family that I wanted to play lacrosse at Duke University. I was enamored with the school, the athletes....the entire DUKE experience!

My dad chuckled and said "That's great bud, but what's your backup plan? Because Duke is like the Alabama of football for college lacrosse".

I honestly remember turning to him - ANGRY - and saying "I'm going to play lacrosse at Duke.  There is NO backup plan!", and storming off to my room.

Fast forward  twelve years later, and I was blessed to have had the opportunity to get recruited by Duke Lacrosse!  I always knew that I was somehow connected to Duke, I just didn't think it would actually come true!

"THE DILEMMA"

Regardless of my  childhood dream, I was torn when it came down to making a decision about which college would be my future home.  On the one hand, I had THE elite academic institution in the WORLD - Harvard University - asking me to join them on a building journey.  Its lacrosse program, while not as esteemed as Duke's, was on the rise.  They had hired Coach Gerry Byrne - a defensive lacrosse Jedi and someone I had looked up to for years - to turn the team into a championship caliber program.  His claim to recruits (which resonated with me deeply) was "Don't go to a program that is winning today and be just another cog in the wheel.  Come to Harvard and build a championship program!  Be part of changing the trajectory of our school and live in infamy forever". I was sold on the vision and goal, so I committed to Harvard.

"KEEP GRINDING KID"

As the year progressed, I was thrilled and proud to tell folks I was a "Harvard Man".  I kept grinding in school and in the military system at Culver, being assigned the role of Battalion Commander, with the responsibility of leading, guiding and encouraging 150+ cadets (my friends and peers).  I was in auto-pilot, staying in line with my dad's mantra of "Just Keep Grinding Kid", with no goal or focus other than to do my very best that day and let the future work itself out.  I worked every day to be the best version of myself in this new and unknown role, and I truly loved the experience of the unknown, other than keep my head down and work hard at the little things each day, knowing that in the not so distant future, I could look back at this moment in my life and be proud that I did my best.

"CHANGE OF HEART"

But as time progressed, something started to raise concerns about the direction of my future.  While I was somewhat linked with the  current and incoming Harvard lacrosse players, I was also able to connect with many of the current and past Duke lacrosse players. As time progressed, I soon realized that I felt more in commone with the Duke players than with the Harvard folks. The way they viewed their program, how they spoke of playing and competing together (vs simply touting the expectations of winning in the future). I was most drawn to the stark differences of the warmth and alignment the Duke players shared (very much like the camaraderie and love my Culver teammates and I share).  Soon thereafter, I came to realize while my head was saying "Harvard", my heart and soul was screaming "DUKE".

So I took my time to truly evaluate this change of heart, not wanting to make a rash decision.  I had numerous conversations with my family, friends, coaches and teammates. As months went by, I soon came to realize I always knew where my heart felt most at home.....in Durham, NC - and I took the unprecedented leap to decommit from Harvard and decided to join the Duke lacrosse family.

"NEXT PLAY"

I felt terrible calling Coach Byrne and telling him I was decommitting from Harvard, but it was something that had to be done.  I truly admire Coach Byrne and wish him the very best of luck in his efforts at Harvard.

Right or wrong, I am now fully committed to Duke, and I couldn't be happier!  My dad keeps telling people "I never knew my kid was George Kittel"!  I guess my happiness is boiling over as I feel at peace with my decision, and it showed in my energy and happiness on and off the field.

I can't wait to get back on the CMA campus with my "2024 CMLX Boyz" and finish our mission of establishing a Culver legacy together.

2021-22 Lacrosse Recap

2022 vs The Hill Academy - NJM 9.JPG

YEAR 2 AT CULVER

My second year at Culver Academies was even better than my first year.  Coming into the year as a full-fledged cadet made life so much simpler.  I was able to settle down and really get into my personal groove about what I wanted to be and do during my time at Culver.

LAST MINUTE ROOMATE SCRAMBLE

My roommate situation ended up being a last-minute fix, in that my expected roommate left Culver two (2) weeks before school started.  It was a tough decision for him and even though I supported him, I was challenged with the fact I had no roommate going into the school year.

Luckily, I was able to work with our unit counselor and reconnect with my first-year roommate, and we got the exact room we had our first year (on the 4th floor walkup of the Battery building – not ideal but better than other options).

THE GRIND

Being put on the Varsity my 1st year, I was determined to not let that happen again. In the spring, I would have my practice with Varsity and then go out and stand on the sideline to watch the prep team.  After their practice, I worked on my footwork and defense drills with the Prep players, hoping to learn from them what I needed to be successful. And I watched tons of film with my teammates and coaches to learn what I could do to be a better player and teammate on the defense.

MY CHANCE

Culver is a unique school in that it lets lacrosse players train year-round.  In the fall, we have Captain Practices and the team travels somewhere in the Midwest to play the best opponents in our area. We got a chance to match up against Brother Rice (MI), WRA and 2021 Juiced Cherries National Team.

Additionally, the Prep team usually travels to the east coast to play in the National High School Lacrosse Showcase (NHSLS) and sneak a game or two against east coast opponents. I was lucky enough to be invited to travel with the squad and got a chance to play significant time against some great competitors (Calvert Hall, The Hill Academy, St. Johns Prep of DC and Georgetown Prep).

THE LAST MILE

As winter approached middle Indiana, I was preparing to play in the Culver Box Lacrosse program when I received an invite to attend a college Prospect Day event. It was one of my top college target schools, so I jumped at the opportunity. It was a solid outing on a beautiful day, and the one thing the coaching staff told me was while they liked my style of play and skill, I should work on “bulking up a bit”.  At that time, I weighed 160lbs and realized they were right – I needed to be stronger and more physical with my level of play.

When I returned to Culver, I made sure I worked out in the weight room every day during my free period, trying to build mass and strength.  By the time the 2022 season kicked off, I weighted 185lbs and felt more comfortable matching up against bigger players.

PREP TIME

I was blessed to make the 2022 Culver Prep team and although I had worked my tail off to get on the team, I was shocked to learn that I was named a starter on the defense for the season.

I was surrounded by amazing talent in our defensive group (R Clay – Michigan; C Vickrey – Princeton; Z Mesa – Lehigh; C Pack – Ohio State; J Pisani - Michigan) and wanted to make sure I didn’t let them or the team down, so I put in extra hours with Coach Ryan Terefenko to make sure I was learning as much of his limitless knowledge about the game.

LEARNING FROM “THE MAN”

I was so blessed to have Coach T teaching me so much about defense, lacrosse and how to play physical (within the rules), and I made sure I didn’t waste the opportunity to gain experience from one of the most prolific defensemen of our generation.  I listened, learned, applied, and repeated over and over and over. I found the game moving slower, and I was able to anticipate what our opponents were trying to do before the play even formulated.

HARD WORK, EFFORT & ATTITUDE

Our Culver Prep team started the season ranked #8 in the country, and soon teams learned why we should be ranked much higher!  We handily beat all our Midwest opponents we faced, and when we traveled out east for our annual Spring Break trip, we had successful outings against some amazing squads.   We lost 2 games by 1 point each against nationally ranked teams, and left the east coast energized to get back to Indiana and get better so we could avenge those losses.

We got to play lacrosse on so many amazing fields during the season - like the Univ of Michigan and Univ of Maryland stadiums – and we were able to compete against the best of the best across the Midwest and East Coast.  That made our team bond in amazing ways, and I’m so happy to have gone to battle with such amazing teammates and coaches.

SUCCESS ACHIEVED

In the end, our team had only one (1) home game the entire 2022 season, and we travelled over 7,000+ miles on a bus to accumulate a final regular season record of 20-2, along with a #3 national ranking issued by several prominent lacrosse governing bodies.

From there, we went on to complete our season by playing in and winning the inaugural Premier Prep Championship, the MSLA (Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association) Championship and finally (and my favorite of them all), the National High School Lacrosse Showcase (NHSLS) Championship (which was televised on ESPN).

LEADERSHIP

When I look back at our year, I feel immensely grateful to have played thirty-five (35) extremely competitive lacrosse games in the span of four (4) months, with our amazing seniors who all were headed to prominent lacrosse programs in the future.

I was truly blessed to be a member of this CMA Prep Team and to compete alongside my teammates.  This will forever be one of my most favorite years of lacrosse and one I hope to use as I continue to grow and learn as I move into the leadership role of our future squads.

NOT OVER YET

But, for many of our 2024 players on the Prep squad, the hard part of our year was yet to come!  We all headed into our grueling “recruitment summer season” where it was our time to shine in front of college recruiters to hopefully get a phone call or text on 9/1.

What’s in store for me only God knows, so I’ll just keep focusing on putting in the work to be the best version of “ME” that I can be. I keep focus on the fundamental lessons learned throughout my life, and take solace in knowing my family, friends, coaches, and teammates are behind me all the way.

As my dad keeps telling me before every game …...”Be Safe.  Have Fun.  Try not to suck!”

YEAR 1 AT CULVER

My first year at Culver Academies was an amazing experience.  I knew what to expect since my brother (Alex) attended Culver, and I had spent a lot of time visiting the campus and hearing stories about his experiences.

After getting through Boards (passing the military requirements to become a full fledged cadet), I got settled into the boarding school lifestyle and began focusing heavily on my studies and lacrosse.

LIFE MOVED FAST

At first I was a fish out of water and my head was spinning!  I was training with the famed Culver Prep team and I was thrown on the field against All-American players like Jack Grey and Ty English every day.

Every practice, every rep, every ground ball was a struggle.  I honestly felt lost and overwhelmed.

When the time came for the formalized teams to be chosen (at Culver we have a Prep and Varsity team), I found out I was put on the Varsity team (and not the Prep team) even though nearly all of my 2024 classmates who came to Culver together made the Prep team.

MOVING FORWARD

It was very hard for me to accept this outcome, but Coach Birsner reminded me that Jack Gray was on the Varsity team when he was a Freshman, so not to get down on myself or feel like my dream of playing at a high level college was lost.  He encouraged me to work hard and commit myself to earning a spot on the team the next year.

In that moment, I promised myself that I was going to do everything possible to make the Prep team in the future, and I got to work!

PUTTING IN THE WORK

I went to all of my Varsity practices, but after practice, I would put in "extra work" with the Prep players who were also getting their extra work in after their practice.

I asked the Prep defensive players to share drills they recommended and spent evenings and most of my weekends running through those drills by myself.

I worked out in the weight room constantly, and made sure I was eating healthy foods while studying how supplements can help my body grow.

I studied film with the Prep players to understand what they were seeing (vs what I was observing) and learning things I had never seen on the lacrosse field.

Even though I had a grueling Varsity season because of the hard work I was putting in during my own time on top of my training with the Varsity team, I felt like I was able to dominate our opponents who were 3-4 years older and more experienced.

Our Varsity team made Indiana  Sectionals that year, but fell short to the team that won the 2021 state championship (HSE Fishers).

I want to send a shout out to Niko DiPonio, Kaiden Kohls and Alex Menendez who gave me constant help and advise during this time of my life.  Their friendship, guidance and support undoubtedly carried me through that difficult time in my Culver lacrosse career.
